Orange Vocoder 10AE latency?

Postby meeble » 09.08.2009 22:52

hello,

Does Orange Vocoder 10AE AU plugin add any latency? We're using it in a live performance situation and are looking to use only plugins that do not add latency.

OrangeVocoder adds a latency of about 20 msec (@44.1kHz) to the signal that passes through it (due to buffering and the AGC circuit) but this is compensated for by the host (of course, this compensation will not work in a realtime context).

There is no such thing as full duplex (ie. realtime playthrough) processing without latency, as the sound I/O hardware requires buffering and will add some latency even with no plug ins in the chain.

Hello,

Can you tell me exactly how many samples of latency OV adds? (rather than in milliseconds?)

I know about host input and output latencies - those are unavoidable. What is avoidable are additional latencies
added by additional plugins.

512 sample frames @ 44.1kHz because the AGC window is 1024 frames in size and uses lookahead measurement.

thank you.

I wish I could find a AU vocoder that sounded as good as the OV with minimal latency!

Thank you! Unfortunately, AGC is important for intelligibility so there's no way to keep the sound and reduce latency... If you're after processing voice this is usually not a problem, but it can be a problem with drums in a realtime context...

yeah, so I am having to look into some other vocoders for our live show:

Virsyn Matrix
Eiosis ELS Vocoder

both claim to have no latency - I'll have to test them out and see how they sound compared to OV.

Personally, I only tried the Eiosis so far and didn't like it, its sound was too muffled and hard to understand. I did not try the Virsyn Matrix yet but I'll check it out, thanks for the tip.

btw neuronaut,

Here is a video of a live performance where the vocals are 100% orange vocoder (even with the latency!)

Not sure if you are into it, but if you are, you could use it as a promo for the product!

:)
